Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Therapeutic Approach
I’m proud to say I have more than eight years of experience working with kids and teens diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and ED, and their families. I’ve found that often the missing link when working with these clients is the family unit. This is a family affair! The entire family must participate in the therapy and support of the client.
The family system joining in the process makes all the difference in the world. Through self-acceptance and empathy and identifying new ways of communicating, everyday difficulties become manageable, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Individual clients and Autism Group members learn to manage anxiety and build their communication skills by utilizing a personally designed coping skills toolbox that I call, ‘The Goody Bag’. This tool is a novelty and makes the whole process exciting for clients.
I encompass art and improvisational activities, as well as role-playing, to problem solve and practice new skills. I strive to take each client on a journey of self-mastery; to succeed in making the connection we all crave and need. Most importantly, I insist on having fun doing it!
